What is a Rework Station?
A rework station is a specialized tool used for performing repair and maintenance on PCBs. The term “rework” implies the ability to fix or modify components on a circuit and allow technicians to de-solder faulty parts and replace them with functioning ones efficiently. Other than a basic soldering iron and various soldering materials, which are effective for adding components to a printed circuit board (PCB), a rework station also has various other desoldering tools to simplify the process of removing and replacing small, sensitive components without causing damage. Additionally, it enhances productivity by streamlining the assembly process, conserving solder wire, reducing re-soldering time, minimizing electricity use, and optimizing the workspace.
A rework station includes a control unit, a soldering pencil, and a desoldering hot air gun. The control unit acts as the hub wherein the user can set the temperature and other parameters for both the soldering pencil and hot air gun to rework with utmost accuracy. The soldering pencil itself is rather an essential component for standard soldering applications with its parameters controlled from the control unit. The hot air gun applies sufficient heating to the mounted component for removal. Specifically, it works wonders in removing larger SMD integrated circuits (ICs) such as QFPs, PLCCs, and SOPs by enabling a careful and clean detachment of components without damaging the board.
