What are FR-3 Laminates?

FR-3 or Flame Retardant 3 is the NEMA designation for Synthetic Resin paper that uses an epoxy resin binder which is used as Printed Circuit Board Laminates. FR-3 laminates are made up of multiple plies of cotton impregnated with 2 coats of modified flame retardant epoxy resins. They are basically FR-2 laminates with an epoxy resin binder.

FR-3 laminates are generally not recommended for multi-layer PCB’s.
