Mixed Material PCB Solutions

To achieve specific performance levels required in certain applications, different materials are used, each contributing specific characteristics to the finished PCB. The processing of these materials introduces challenges due to their different mechanical responses to production stresses. Materials can behave differently during pressing processes, including expansion or contraction in different directions or reaching vitreous transition at different stages. These variations can lead to misalignment between PCB layers and reduced coupling performance. In mixed-material PCB construction, commonly used materials such as FR4 are combined with ceramic dielectric, Teflon, or Kapton, depending on application requirements.

Cistelaier SpA processes over 100 different base materials and provides support from the initial design stages of PCB development to assist in selecting appropriate materials.

Embedded PCB production

The company also provides PCBs with embedded technology, developed to address the limited space on outer layers for electronic components. Embedded PCBs integrate components within one or more internal layers, allowing additional active or passive components to be housed within the board.

Two main techniques are used in embedded PCB production:

  • Soldering components to pads within internal layers and including them in subsequent pressing cycles
  • Attaching components to insulating layers and connecting them electrically using laser-drilled holes after pressing

While these approaches support space-saving and higher integration, they can limit repairability and require evaluation of cost-benefit considerations.

Cistelaier also provides large-sized and extra-thick PCBs. Large boards are used for back-panels and large assemblies where dimensions match the final application. Extra-thick PCBs are used in high-power applications that require thick copper laminates or bus bars.
