CopperDot’s IMS PCBs, also known as a metal core PCB (MCPCB), incorporate a thick metal layer as the base substrate, typically aluminum, copper or alloy materials. The metal core functions as a thermal conductor and heat spreader, enabling heat dissipation compared to standard PCB substrates such as FR4 glass epoxy. This supports cooling of high-power electronics including LEDs, power modules, laser diodes and RF amplifiers.

The IMS PCB structure supplied by CopperDot includes a metal substrate coated with a thin dielectric layer that electrically insulates the base while allowing thermal transfer. A copper layer is laminated on top and processed to form circuit traces, pads and vias. This configuration allows heat to be conducted across the PCB and away from high-temperature components.

CopperDot’s IMS PCB solutions provide thermal conductivity that enables rapid heat dissipation and reduces localized hot spots. The lower coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of the metal core helps reduce mechanical stress during thermal cycling, supporting reliability over time. The metal core also enables low impedance and supports higher current operation with reduced voltage drops.

Additional characteristics of IMS PCBs supplied by CopperDot include structural strength, electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding capability and compatibility with various dielectric materials, including ceramic, flexible and high-temperature types.

CopperDot supports IMS PCB applications across multiple sectors. In LED lighting, IMS PCBs are used as heat sinks for high-brightness LEDs in luminaires, signage and street lighting. In power electronics, they are used in power supplies, motor drives and converters where higher current operation and direct heat sinking are required.

In telecommunications, CopperDot's IMS PCBs are used in mobile base stations, data centers and networking equipment to manage heat in RF modules and other components. Industrial applications include factory equipment, robotics and process control systems operating in high-temperature environments.

In automotive systems, IMS PCBs are used in LED headlights and taillights, as well as under-hood electronics and charging systems requiring cooling. In consumer electronics, they are used in LED grow lights, gaming PC components and home theater amplifiers where thermal dissipation and longevity are required.

CopperDot’s IMS PCB designs consist of a metal core layer, dielectric insulation layer, copper circuitry layer and protective coatings such as ENIG or OSP. Surface mount components, including resistors, capacitors, LEDs and integrated circuits, are assembled onto the boards.

The company’s manufacturing process includes bonding of dielectric and copper layers to the metal substrate, photolithography for circuit patterning, etching to remove excess copper, drilling for vias and component holes, and plating to support soldering and prevent oxidation. Electrical testing and inspection are conducted to ensure performance and reliability.
