What Is an IMS PCB?

An IMS PCB is a circuit board constructed on a metal plate—typically aluminum—covered by a specialized thermal prepreg layer. This dielectric layer provides excellent heat-conducting properties while maintaining high dielectric strength to withstand elevated voltages. Because of this design, IMS boards are ideal for high-energy or high-thermal-load environments, such as modern lighting systems featuring high-intensity LEDs.

Superior Heat Dissipation Capabilities

The key advantage of IMS PCBs lies in their thermal performance. Compared with a standard 1.60 mm FR4 PCB, an IMS board with a 0.15 mm thermal prepreg can offer thermal resistance that is over 100 times lower. This enables efficient heat transfer away from components, dramatically improving reliability and extending the lifespan of electronic assemblies.

Technical Highlights and Specifications

NCAB’s IMS PCBs are engineered to deliver outstanding thermal management through carefully selected materials and precision manufacturing:

  • Layers: 1–4 layers
  • Substrate Materials: Aluminum or copper plates combined with FR4, PTFE, or other thermal dielectrics
  • Dielectric Thickness: 0.05–0.20 mm
  • Thermal Conductivity: 1–12 W/m/K
  • Copper Weights: 35–140 μm
  • Metal Core Thickness: 0.40–3.20 mm
  • Maximum Dimensions: 550 mm x 700 mm
  • Surface Finishes: HASL, LF HASL, OSP, ENIG, immersion tin, and immersion silver
  • Drilling Capabilities: Mechanical drills down to 0.30 mm and laser drills as small as 0.10 mm (0.075 mm for advanced designs)
  • Profile Methods: Punching and liquid-cooled routing

These construction features allow NCAB to deliver highly effective heat-sink solutions for demanding thermal applications, offering engineers the flexibility to design with confidence.
