What is PCB Panelization?
PCB panelization is the process of combining multiple smaller printed circuit boards into a single larger manufacturing panel. Instead of producing each board individually, multiple copies are arranged together in rows and columns on a panel.
This technique improves manufacturing efficiency, assembly speed, and production consistency. After fabrication and component assembly, the individual boards are separated from the panel using depanelization techniques such as routing, V-scoring, or tab routing.
Panelization is widely used in PCB fabrication and automated assembly processes to reduce cost and improve production throughput.

Uses of Panelization Calculation
Panelization calculation helps PCB designers and manufacturers determine the correct panel layout and size before fabrication.
Common uses include:
- Arranging multiple PCBs in a manufacturing panel
- Optimizing space utilization during PCB fabrication
- Planning automated pick-and-place assembly
- Reducing manufacturing cost and material waste
- Ensuring proper spacing between boards for routing or V-scoring
Accurate panelization helps ensure efficient production and reliable PCB assembly.
Panelization Calculation
Panel size depends on several parameters:
- Individual board width (W)
- Individual board height (H)
- Number of boards placed horizontally (columns) (C)
- Number of boards placed vertically (rows) (R)
- Gap between adjacent boards (G)
The gap between boards provides space for routing tools, depanelization, and mechanical tolerances.
By calculating these parameters, designers can determine the total panel dimensions and overall panel area required for manufacturing.
Panelization Equation:
Panel Size=((W×C)+G×(C−1))×((H×R)+G×(R−1))
Where
- Board Width(W) = Width of a single PCB (mm)
- Board Height(H) = Height of a single PCB (mm)
- Columns(C) = Number of boards arranged horizontally
- Rows(R) = Number of boards arranged vertically
- Gap(G) = Spacing between adjacent boards (mm)
- Panel Size = Total PCB panel size (mm²)
