Via Impedance Calculator
This calculator can determine the impedance of a via in a printed circuit board (PCB). Enter the the inductance and capacitance of the via and the calculator will display the resulting impedance in ohms.
Enter the values of Inductance and capacitance and click on calculate to get Via Impedance.
What is Via Impedance?
The via impedance is the opposition to electric current flow through a via on a PCB. Vias are conducting paths through which electrical connection is made across various layers on a PCB. In high-speed digital circuits and high-frequency analog designs, via impedance can be quite critical regarding signal and power integrity. A mismatched via impedance may result in signal reflections, power losses, and EMI, hence poor performance in circuitry.
Via impedance is derived from the via geometry, material properties of the PCB-dielectric constant-and then frequency. The accurate computation of via impedance ensures that designs work optimally with RF and microwave frequencies.
Inputs:
- Inductance (L): The inductance of the via, in Henries (H).
- Capacitance (C): The capacitance of the via, in Farads (F).
Formula:
The impedance (Z) of the via is calculated using the following formula:

Where:
- Z = Impedance (Ohms)
- L = Inductance (Henries)
- C = Capacitance (Farads)
Outputs:
- Via Impedance (Z): The calculated impedance of the via in ohms (Ω).
How to Calculate Via Impedance:
- Inductance (L): Measure or calculate the inductance of the via in Henries.
- Capacitance (C): Measure or calculate the capacitance of the via in Farads.
- Apply Formula: Substitute the values of L and C into the formula.
- Result: Calculate the via impedance using the provided formula.
The via impedance calculator streamlines this process, providing an easy and accurate way to compute impedance and ensure proper PCB design for high-frequency applications.
